I decided to build this website to teach myself HTML5 and CSS. This is my first website that I have built and I wanted to build it from scratch. A little corner of the web that I can call mine and build upon. At the time of writing this I have been working on it for about 3 weeks and it can very much be called Version 1.0!
I have decided to make this supplement for my Twitch channel. I haven't seen many people with them in their 'About' section, so I thought why not?
My first gaming memory would be watching my brother play his new ZX Spectrum+. He even allowed me to play 'Jet-Pac', albeit briefly! It was enough though, to start me on my journey of playing and collecting video games, which has become a life long passion. A few years later, I was given my own ZX Spectrum 128K +2 and then, soon after, I was given a Sega Master System. I loved the arcade versions of Golden Axe and Operation Wolf so the Master system was perfect to me. It even had the added bonus of being cartridge ROM based so I didn't have to spend 10 minutes to... maybe... load from tape!
In the mid-90's, like many people, my family bought our first multimedia PC. A Packard Bell with a Pentium 75, 16mb RAM, 1mb graphics card and Windows 95. Not the most powerful PC even by contemporary standards. All that really mattered to me though was that I could play Doom, Descent, Dark Forces and Command & Conquer.
It wasn't long until we were connected to the internet with a 56K dial-up modem. This was the primary means of accessing the internet at the time, with the sound of the modem connecting being a nostalgic memory for me. Connecting to the 'Information SuperHighway' (as it was called back then) felt like a big event, with a sense of curiosity, wonder and adventure; to explore new topics, learn new things and play games online with people around the world.
Many people say that the 1980's was the best decade (I guess, it's the 'stranger things' effect). For me though, I think the 1990's was way more exciting and an amazing time to witness first hand.
I miss those early days of the internet. Some call it the 'wild-west' of the internet but it seemed like a much more exciting and mysterious place and it didn't feel completely overridden with ads, mega-corporations and sanitised copy & paste template websites!
Neocities has been a bit of a flashback to that exciting time. Creativity with a little dash of chaos. It has been great to see what people are building for their personal sites. Where people are expressing themselves the way I feel the internet was supposed to be. Before big business came along and spoiled it.
The website I have made here on Neocities is pretty basic by most people's standards but I am rather proud of what I have achieved so far and I intend to continue to learn and build on the site as time goes on. I plan to learn Javascript to give the website some extra sparkle.
Beyond all that... you can find me on my Twitch channel weekly. I'm a variety streamer who loves playing all kinds of games, from retro classics to modern blockbusters. I tend to lean on the older titles more but there's fun to be had in modern games too.
My favourite genres are Adventure, RTS, Strategy, Point & Click and FPS, but I am always interested in trying out new things.
... If that seems like your kind of thing, then drop me a follow on twitch to see when I am live and come say hi!
